thanks for posting these! They are wonderful pictures.
I fell in love with Krakow. It had that old college town feel but
much more classy and old world than anything in the states.
If I ever get the money and bone up on my Polish I would love to go back.

Did you go to the one night club/bar there?
It was a trip.
They had these little old grandmas manning the women's room.
It was so wierd. A dirty bar, with drinking and smoking and girls in slutty club clothes and this
little old babcia in a head scarf taking zwoty and re-stocking the paper towels.

Danke. :D

How long ago did you visit? There are a lot more than one nightculb here now; there seem to be at least a dozen. [livejournal.com profile] tyrsalvia had last visited here a decade ago and said the differences are amazing....

hmmm. It had to have been 8 or 9 years ago. There were several bars, but we only found one club that had dancing and music.

I also enjoyed the salt mine pictures and the link. It was funny, when we went, my mother buying all these expensive trinkets for her freinds and mine were all thrilled with a bag of salt! How was the air in Krakow? When we went it was like being in second hand smoke 24/7, even though they had taken steps to reduce pollution created by the communist-run gov't (they were apaprently not big environmentalists).

The air in the mines was so clean, it was a perfect antidote for the time above ground. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

That church was really quite impressive, climbing up into one of the towers was a high point of my visit to Krakow. I also visited Auschwitz-Birkenau while I was there, and despite knowing well what I was visiting, actually being there was really overwhelming.

Being prepared intellectually did nothing to lessen the visceral impact of actually being there.
On my tour we had an actual survivor and his daughter with us. When we got to the room of piles of hair I was completely overwhelmed.

That was the very same room where it hit me incredibly hard. Up until that point, even knowing I was at the site, the reality of what happened there just didn't kick in. It happened again at Birkenau, when I was in the tower overlooking the site, and seeing the vastness of the camp left me utterly stunned.
