[Poll #817566]

My take: yeah, sure, the guys that sent this information in were dummies. However, [livejournal.com profile] rfjason was even dumber to expose himself to the potential legal liability for undertaking the action in the first place. Even if he wins any pending lawsuits it's going to cost him a pretty penny.

In any case, be careful who you send your personal info to on the internet, kids....

I think publically posting other ppl's private info without their consent should be a crime.

But I also think the ppl who gave him their private info are dumbasses.

These people willingly handed over personal detials and photos in the hopes of getting some tail. These people do not deserve protection.

This guy baited men who view themselves as "ruff...tuff...brutal...muscular...arrogant...fucking bastard[s] who thrive on giving pain...[and who are] self-centered, nasty, egotistic, [and not to mention] sadistic," he publicly humiliates these men while at the same time admitting that his exact location/address is public, and then he and others say that it is the men who replied to the ad who are stupid?

This whole deal is a stupid parade that celebrate stupidity on Stupid Day, and Jason (who has more to fear than lawsuits methinks) is the drum major.

I think that wanting to get some tail and being stupid doesn't mean that you deserve to have things you sent to someone in confidence exposed without your permission. Yes, what the guys did was not exactly bright. But what was done to them was malicious, bullying, and probably criminal. Bleah.

Yes. It's... really not funny, at all. What Jason is doing is disgusting. The fact that his victims acted stupidly makes it no less disgusting.

This asshole's gonna get himself beaten in an alley by somebody he hurt any hour now. And I'd refuse medical treatment.

I don't generally condone violence, but how else do you communicate with sociopaths? Most societal pressures mean nothing to them.

Sure, there are some people who aren't clued in about personal information proetcetion on the internet. And every single person who thinks this is funny has a similar flaw, whether it be accepting free drinks at a bar, going somewhere with a relative stranger because you're hoping they'll put out, taking illegal drugs without testing their ingredients first, or mouthing off in public forums like this livejournal.

And some other sociopath will think it's funny when you get "taught a lesson" in paranoia.

On second thought, maybe jailing this guy and seeing what the other inmates do to him is more humorous.

I didn't chose any of the options, because none of them quite fit how I see this.

I just returned from the play "Ragnarok: Doom of the gods." The main character was Loki. He is shown as the guy who brought most of the great things to the gods in Asgard, though there was a price for each. His actions among the gods really makes us think about our actions. He holds a mirror up for us to view ourselves and that affords us the opportunity to chage for the better.

So the reason I bring this up is that I think that this guy, Jason, where intentionally or not, is doing the same thing as Loki. He is pointing out the weaknesses in our society and in our personality, so that we can do some introspection and perhaps change ourselves or our society for the better. While I would not take on that kind of role myself, I can respect (as an observer) the positive and negative effects of Jason's actions.

I do think he should be held accountable for his actions as much as they are legally prosecutable. But as a Sysadmin, I tend to be down on folks using business accounts for personal use (though I tend to handle it without getting people fired), especially when it be a legal liability for the business. I think both sides are equally liable in this case, and hope that everyone learns a lesson from this.

Can't say I'm with you there -- most of the men posting didn't use business accounts, many weren't married, etc. etc.

However, if this guy's Loki, I'm completely happy with giving him Loki's punishment.

At first I thought, "all of the above" - but it's really not funny at all when you think about it. Peoples' lives could be ruined. They kind of deserve to be taken out of the gene pool for sheer stupidity, but it's still not funny. Nor is it funny that Mr. Fortuny will probably get killed or sued off the planet, or both. Or that there are miserable sociopaths like him all over the place who have absolutely nothing better to do with their intellects than to play these kinds of games. I had my personal information posted up at one point because I hadn't known that other people could see my address and phone number when they did a whois (I fixed that since then). I didn't find out until years later.

There's something remarkably slippery about these types - they seem to avoid being prosecuted for whatever they do. I hope these guys are savvy and well-to-do enough to sue him - but he probably preyed on people who can't afford to sue (and that'll become even harder if they lose their jobs).

It's mean hearted and cruel. No matter how funny something like this may seem or what lessons it teaches us about sharing our information online, there were still people involved who didn't do anything wrong aside from trust someone. What does he intend to teach us? Don't trust people? Thanks a lot for the update, jerkwad. All he's doing is perpetuating mistrust and maliciousness. I honestly don't think there is any value in this. Just some asshole showing off.

As somebody who frequents ED, I'm suprised I didn't see this on the wiki (unless it happened while I was in the desert). I'm pretty familiar with the typical format of ED articles and it sounds to mee like the blog yoo link to is either misleading or the guy in question is pretty fucking lame. Don't get mee wrong, ED is a class-action lawsuit waiting to happen, and the editors there tend to be pretty fucking cruel (usually in a way I find enjoyable but not always), but I'd like to read the article in question before condemning the guy.

One of the reasons I'm glad ljoto is gone is that I was pretty sure that if things kept going the way they had been going, it would only be a matter of time before ED found out.

It's called society. You get all kinds, but your approval of their practices is not required unless they're actually making uninvited advances - craigslist announcements count as invitation. This says much about his cheerleaders, too, who feel the need to compulsively poke around under every stone in sight just to see if the inevitable slimy things live under them.

Hope the little shit gets the smile wiped permanently off his face.
