My Very Educated Mother Cruelly Just Served Us Nine Putrid, Cheesy Yo-yos.

...what, you wanted to name the last one something other than Yuggoth?

Really? I thought it was eight planets, three plutons, and a large planet-esque asteroid.

As [livejournal.com profile] the_van_dyck noted, astronomers want to distinguish between a planet and a pluton. According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluton), though, a pluton is a kind of planet. Go figure.

Also, The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pluton) claims that as many as 50 plutons would join the list, so if you think of a pluton as being a planet, our solar system has dozens of planets.

I don't know what difference it makes...the stuff is already out there. Any attachment to a specific number of planets is just our tried-and-true lust for older scientists and phlosophers. It's like claiming we have five senses.

It's fine with me, but only if they name the new ones Mickey, Goofy and Daffy.

I think your acronym would be great to teach in schools, though: when we learned the earlier version of it, I hated the little song that went with it and such...This one would be a great angsty grunge number instead of that stupid kiddie song from the 60s...

I'm still trying to figure out how Pluto's moon made the list - aren't there a good many moons out there that would also qualify?

And the cat ran away with the moon...

One of the implications of this new scheme is that our Moon may one day be considered a planet:
