cardinal joseph ratzinger
ROME - Support for German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger
appears to be building ahead of the conclave to select a
new pope, Italian newspapers reported Wednesday.

(Yes, I created this image.)

This is a much better choice for Pope. He plays the saxophone.... (And, since I'm still technically a confirmed Catholic, despite my numerous differences with the Church, I have an opinion.)

Holy crap, that's gonna be all over the Internet in no time.

It's also kind of disturbing just how much they look alike.

Eeuw. Is his face really green? He looks like a George Romero zombie.

Nahh... I think you're seeing the results of some AP amateur fudging with the color levels so the red doesn't pop out so much or reflect off his face.

he's still a scary lookin' dude.

Love the picture.

Also, I adore the idea of having Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga as the next Pope.

You're kidding...Ratzinger? For fuck's sake! He was in Hitler's army! He's responsible for nearly all of the homophobic encyclicals...

Scary, scary, scary!

I never thought of that "technically a confirmed catholic" thing -- how does one undo that, anyway?

The fact that confirmation is made in 7th grade, by 12- 14-year-olds is ridiculous. How was I able to make an adult decision? Had I been 18 or 21, I wouldn't have made that decision... because the truth is, it wasn't a decision at all when I was a kid. It was an expectation.

[They tricked me into it with the new name thing, by the way. I was agaiinst it, but they said I could have the new name, whioch I have wanted my whole life. I was sooo pissed when I found out I would not be called Rachel, I almost blew a gasket at the "confimation party."]

I was confirmed at age 22 (I went through RCIA, to convert from being a Methodist. Interestingly enough, the theology I got from RCIA classes was the final straw in undoing any remaining attachment I had to Christian dogma.)

I'm actually somewhat comforted that Ratzinger is being talked up... the old saying of "he who enters a conclave as Pope, leaves as a Cardinal" is almost a statistical fact.

The only way he'll get elected is if the Cardinals decide they want a transitional figure - and from what I saw of the crowds in Rome, that's not even on the agenda any more.

If the Cardinals want a conservative, they're going to go with Arinze, I think. Not that he's the best choice in MY opinion, but he's no Ratzinger.

I strongly suspect they'll choose an Italian. The bureaucracy needs a shot in the arm and a little direction.

Rather unpleasant. I can see why they'd prefer him to a bright, shiny, cheerful populist Pope.

Sigh...

Interesting. I did it all the traditional, Catholic School way. I really don't like that -- confirming adult faith, at that age, when you have no say is not a confirmation or affrimation -- it's doing what is expected of you. No kid *didn't* get confirmed.

I suspect, though, if it was put off until adulthood, there would be signifcantly less confirmed catholics.

I think i am going to research how to get myself officially out of the church, if such a thing is even possible [or matters.]

"Are you threatening me, Montsignor?"

I think John Shelby Spong would be a good choice, but apparently he's disqualified on a technicality.

You have heard the scuttlebutt that the next Pope is supposed to be the Anti-Christ right? At least all my conspiracy/prophesy nut friends are going on about it....

I'm going for "Catholics come to their own conclusions about God and stop taking direction from a cabal of xenophobic old men with one foot in the grave and one stamping on a human face, forever," but I'm not holding my breath.
